Into the Dark

Our familiar world illuminated by the sun, assumes a different ambience when the sun has gone and the only natural light is from the moon and the stars

Photographing at night can be demanding. It is often cold and the weather forecast, particularly the cloud cover, can be frustratingly inaccurate. Careful planning is required to ensure that objects in the solar system align with the composition. There is always a sense of wonder and connection to our tiny place in the natural world when alone in the dark beneath a star covered sky.

For night photography I mostly use two Sony series 7 cameras, with one astro modified for extra sensitivity to the red spectrum. When time and conditions allow, I will use a star tracker to increase exposure times without incurring trailing stars. A star tracker also allows the lens to be stopped down for reduced vignetting and improved focus across the whole image.
